Speaking about Dayglow, you’ve probably
known him by ‘Can I Call You Tonight?’. The song has over 68,000,000 views
after releasing, what a miracle of algorithm.
Remove the label of Dayglow. He is Sloan
Struble grew up in the suburb of Aldeo, Texas, a young man creating viral
enchantment in his bedroom.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
Some people would choose Netflix for fun, others, the one like Sloan
Struble would take write and produce for psychological treatments. Grew up in a
small town which consider football is a big deal, Sloan dived into his mind
world, using teenage anxiety and isolation to cook his debut album ‘Fuzzybrain’
in his bedroom alone without telling other mortal what he was planned to. The
album born in bedroom classified Dayglow in ‘Bedroom Pop’ playlists, along with
Gus Dapperton, Cuco, Boy Pable and Clario.
Dayglow, the Do-It-Himself band wrote, recorded, produced, mixed ‘Fuzzybrain’ in suburbia bubble, far away from big city where music flourishing. Holding DIY spirit, he even did the clay sculpture of his face on album cover (though the sculpture is falling apart now for sure).
YOU’RE AN OVERNIGHT SENSATION
Dayglow released ‘Fuzzybrain’ before leaving for
college in 2018 and proved himself as a bedroom pop wunderkind. The dreamy,
offbeat, viral spreading ‘CICYT?’ catapulted Sloan into fame. So suddenly
everything’s changed, new friends, new environment, more and more fans and
social media make him feels like he’s Truman lived in American South.
After leaving college, Sloan spent his most time on song
writing like he used to do in high school. He tapped into ‘70s/’80s pop music and
Yacht Rock, inspired by music icons Whitney Huston, Hall & Oates, Steve
Wonder, Michael McDonald, address his understanding of that genre & era in his
second album. Dayglow conceptualize his sophomore album as a soundtrack to a
sitcom that doesn’t exist, juxtapose nostalgic feeling of ‘70s and ‘80s music
into the album.
EVERY LIGHT IN THE HOUSE IS ON
Alongside the concept of second album, “Harmony House”,
Dayglow glue every works with Yachet Rock vibe; take bits and pieces to state what
he has felt in last two year.
On ‘Something’, he determines to make the most of times
he have over an upbeat melody. When scene changes to dance floor, Dayglow dressed
in blue suit, showed a guidance of what “I want to know you, but I can’t do it
right.” in ‘Close To You’ and ‘Crying on the Dancefloor’. Guide by
disco-infused rhythm, tender keyboard sound and sax solo, you found that your
heartbeats pounding like drumbeats in ‘Balcony’.
The introvert songs aside, ‘December’ and ‘Woah Man’ use
acoustic guitar and dreamy synths to sooth anxiety of being transformative: “That
every years has it December/ There’s gonna be days that you just pass right on
through/ But that's what seasons do, they change”. In overture, ‘Like Ivy’
Dayglow recap brimming sound we’ve heard in ‘Something’ and confirm that he’ll
keep growing as ivy with mature music skill.
“Harmony House” is a lot more personal album; unearth
Dayglows’ inner voice and oomph of creating music. Listen to “Harmony House”,
you’ll feel inspired by brimming anthem and helpless joy like Hercules regain
god strength.
